Flexibility is the key to our success at Maine Coast Bicycle Tours. We normally cover about 25 miles a day, offering a challenging yet reasonable ride that allows you to soak up the scenery of the Maine coast. If you'd like to crank it a bit harder than that, we always have auxiliary routes to add additional miles and test your endurance. On the other hand, if you really like to take it easy – if 10 miles is all you want – then that's no problem. We realize that people who take biking trips together don't always have the same energy levels and expectations when it comes to cycling, and our byword is making sure all our guests get exactly what they wish.
Examine our schedule below and discover why Maine Coast Bicycle Tours offers the finest possible New England cycling experience:
Day 1: Check in to your upscale resort inn and then proceed to one of the island's finest oceanfront homes for a cocktail reception, where you'll enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres from the deck high above Frenchman Bay. Hosted by one of Bar Harbor's most affable "summer people," this reception will provide a unique welcome to your week and will give you a glimpse into the marvelous architecture and wonderful lifestyles of Mount Desert Island's summer residents. Other companies simply don't have access to these types of homes.
Day 2: You'll be custom-fitted with 24-speed bikes before starting to explore the famous carriage roads of Acadia National Park, an asset that's unique in all America. Back in 1913, when automobiles were first allowed onto Mount Desert Island, oil baron John D. Rockefeller Jr. responded by beginning to build his own network of roads which would be closed to motorized traffic. This system would eventually encompass 55 miles, and the carriage roads have recently undergone a multi-million-dollar refurbishment that has left them in excellent condition. You'll ride the Eagle Lake, Jordan Pond and Witch Hole loops, and we'll provide an extra segment for those who want to burn a few more calories. For lunch, you値l dine on the tea lawn at the Jordan Pond House, overlooking a dramatic, glacially carved lake nestled among the mountains of Acadia.
Day 3: The Park Loop Road of Acadia National Park is one of the finest oceanside boulevards in the United States, and you'll experience it in all its glory, marveling at the mountains rising directly out of the sea, the 107-foot-high Otter Cliffs and the rugged beauty of the surf-pounded coast. Long after your trip is over, you'll recall the scenery of this area. You'll cover about 22 miles on this route, but you can always take advantage of our service vehicle if you don't feel like going the entire way – or you can extend your trip if you're really into the rhythm of riding.
Day 4: This morning we値l explore some of those out-of-the-way places that many visitors to Mount Desert Island never see. We値l start by riding a portion of the road between Bar Harbor and Seal Harbor, then we値l take the scenic Cooksey Drive, which winds above the picturesque village of Seal Harbor. We値l take a short walk through the woods to Hunters Beach, an amazing popplestone beach that speaks of centuries of pounding surf. Perhaps we値l stop at scenic Ingraham Point to watch lobster boats hauling their traps or to gaze eastward towards the Cranberry Islands. We値l eventually make our way to the village green in Seal Harbor, near the original site of the Rockefeller compound. This afternoon, we'll give those biking muscles a rest by offering a complimentary sea kayaking trip (weather permitting) in Frenchman Bay, the premier paddling area of all New England. For those who'd rather explore on your own, we'll be ready to offer sightseeing tips.
Day 5: The majestic Schoodic Peninsula, located just across Frenchman Bay from Bar Harbor, is the scene of today's ride. We'll pass through the resort community of Winter Harbor and its exclusive Grindstone Neck residential area, where Victorian mansions sit at water's edge, before enjoying a picnic lunch at Schoodic Point, a magnificent headland that juts into the Atlantic and creates crashing waves and surf.
Day 6: We'll custom-tailor this day to the wishes of the group. Some of you might want to experience another section of the carriage roads ("Around Mountain" will challenge even the hardiest bikers), while others might choose the quiet beauty of Northeast Harbor and Sargent Drive, which winds alongside the only fjord on the east coast of North America. After six days on the island, you'll still be marveling at its beauty. Back in Bar Harbor, we'll celebrate with a final luncheon before bidding farewell to a trip that will linger forever in our minds.
